In January 2015, Sweden introduced a support scheme for biogas production through anaerobic digestion of manure.
The support aims to help increase biogas production from manure and thereby gain two-fold environmental and climate benefits through reduced methane emissions from manure and the substitution of fossil energy. The increased digestion of manure offers several environmental benefits. It reduces both emissions of greenhouse gases and eutrophication of fresh and marine waters as well as produces biogas for energy.
The biogas generated can be used to generate electricity or heat, or as vehicle fuel. The subsidy amounts to a maximum of 0.40 SEK/kWh of biogas produced. Between January 2015 and September 2016, a total amount of SEK 69 million was shared among 51 biogas plants. The subsidy is designed as a project and runs from 2014 to 2023, with a total of 385 million allocated for the period.
