The 2024 F-gas regulation sets the objectives to lays down rules on containment, use, recovery, recycling, reclamation and destruction of fluorinated greenhouse gases in the European Union, in compliance with the Montreal Protocol along with EU climate objectives.
It notably:
Organises and expands its quota system for hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), to be phased out by 2050;
Sets stricter rules to prevent emissions;
Facilitates more automation of control to monitor F-gas trade
Sets a cap of HFCs production within the EU, aiming at a 15% reduction rate between 2025 and 2036.
