South Africa’s National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act, as amended in 2022, aims to manage and conserve the country’s biodiversity within the framework of the National Environmental Management Act, 1998. The key objectives include protecting species and ecosystems of national significance, promoting sustainable use of indigenous biological resources, ensuring fair sharing of benefits from bioprospecting involving these resources and addressing related matters. It also established the South African National Biodiversity Institute.
