The Danish Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities announced on 30 June that it would introduce a ban on routine gas flaring. The ban took effect on 1 July 2023.
Until now, legislation stated that oil and gas companies must ensure that their oil and gas activities take place in a sound and appropriate manner, so that waste of raw materials is avoided. The new legislation will be more specific and directly ban gas flaring. The ban will have exceptions for safety reasons, or where operational conditions require burning for a short period of time.
This comes in the context of a global effort to abate methane emissions, under the “Global Methane Pledge Energy Pathway” and the World Bank's Zero Routine Flaring by 2030 initiative.
