The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) have initiated a joint national data center energy efficiency information programme. The programme coordinates a wide variety of activities from the DOE Industrial Technologies Program Save Energy Now initiative, the DOE Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP), and the EPA ENERGY STAR program. The programme is engaging numerous industry stakeholders who are developing and deploying a variety of tools and informational resources to assist data center operators in their efforts to reduce energy consumption in their facilities. The programme will produce specifications, measurements, best practices, and benchmarks that will enable data centre operators to make more informed decisions about the energy efficiency and costs of data centres. Such information will be disseminated to private and public sector data centre operators through catalogs, trade publications, the Internet, or other mechanisms to assist in spreading the best practices and purchasing decisions that reduce the energy consumption of data centres. Specific elements of the programme include: - Developing consistent measurement protocols and metrics to define energy performance in a data centre facility - Developing tools and training for data centre operators - Certifying data centre energy efficiency specialists through a specialised certification programme, Save Energy Now Qualified Specialists - Developing equipment performance specifications and labelling - Recognising Best-in-class data centres and providing them with an Energy Star label DOE and EPA will also designate an organisation to consult with and to coordinate a voluntary national information programme for energy efficiency in data centres.
