The U.S. Treasury Department's Accelerated Recovery Period for Depreciation of Smart Meters and Smart Grid Systems allows for accelerated depreciation for qualified smart electric meters and smart electric grid equipment. This can improve the rate of return for an investment in smart grid technology. Unless the property already qualifies under a shorter recovery schedule, the depreciation schedule allows taxpayers to recover the cost of the property over a 10-year period instead of the 20-year general recovery period for this type of property.
