In 2007, the government of Shandong Province established a CNY 2.133 billion fund to support energy conservation and emissions reductions. Drawing on this fund, the provincial government will allocate funds to subsidise the construction and adoption of solar hot water supply systems by hotels, schools and other establishments. In 2007, a total of 15 million m2 of buildings in Shandong had a solar hot water heating system. In January 2008 it was estimated that 99% of city centre residents used solar power for water heating.
