In 2012, Mozambique adopted the National Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Strategy, covering the period from 2013 to 2025. The strategy sets out  guidelines for action to increase the country's climate resilience and reduce climate risks by integrating adaptation and mitigation measures in sectoral planning.

In the energy sector, one of the priority actions identified is to ensure that emissions from the extractive industry comply with regulatory standards, including by recovering methane from mining and hydrocarbon processing.
