The Hydrogen Headstart program could contribute up to $2.25 billion in support Australia’s hydrogen industry to 2038-39. The program is helping to bridge the gap between the cost to produce renewable hydrogen with its expected sales price. The program has two funding rounds. Round 1 concluded in July 2025, the results of which being the commitments of up to $1.25 billion to two high-merit projects, including:
- $814 million for the Murchison Green Hydrogen project, and
- $432 million for the Hunter Valley Hydrogen Hub.
As part of the 2026-27 Commonwealth Budget, the Australian Government affirmed its commitment of up to $1 billion for Round 2, funding outcomes for which are expected between late 2026 and early 2027.
