The European Union and Chile signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) focused on cooperation sustainable raw materials value chains. The MoU seeks to bolster a competitive and sustainable mining sector that generates quality employment and fosters economic growth for both parties.  The MoU was signed as part of the European Union's Global Gateway strategy, which aims to mobilise up to EUR 300 billion in public and private investments from 2021 to 2027.

The partnership encompasses five key areas.

Integrating sustainable raw materials value chains through projects and trade facilitation,

Cooperation in research and innovation,

Aligning with environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria and international standards,

Developing infrastructure with minimal environmental impact and

Strengthening capacities, enhancing skills and education along the value chains.

Following the MoU, the EU and Chile will work on an operational roadmap to guide cooperation actions carried out by relevant stakeholders from both sides. This partnership complements similar agreements with Canada, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Namibia and Argentina, promoting secure, sustainable and resilient raw materials value chains to drive the transition to climate-neutral and digitalised economies.
