Under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Republic of Kazakhstan and the European Union on a strategic partnership on sustainable raw materials, batteries and renewable hydrogen value chains, the two governments aim to leverage Kazakhstan's high critical raw materials potential and the EU's expertise in minerals development to achieve closer integration of their respective sustainable value chains.

The MoU defines four key areas of work for the Partnership:

Integration of primary and secondary critical raw materials and battery value chains;

Development and integration of renewable hydrogen;

Increasing resilience of raw material, battery and renewable hydrogen value chains;

Research and innovation, skills and capacity building.

The Partnership became operational in May 2023 upon the agreement of both parties to a Roadmap detailing concrete activities for the first year of cooperation (2023-2024).
