The US Department of Energy (DOE) announced a USD 40 million funding for a new Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) program aims to limit the amount of waste produced by advanced nuclear reactors, protect the land and air, and increase the deployment of nuclear as a reliable source of energy. The funding will finance the Optimizing Nuclear Waste and Advanced Reactor Disposal Systems (ONWARDS) program, which is ARPA-E's first program working to identify transformative Advanced Nuclear Reactor (AR), used nuclear fuel (UNF) waste, and UNF disposal pathways.
