In November 2015, the Government of Alberta announced a Climate Leadership Plan that consisted of four main policy pillars:

• Implement a new price on greenhouse gas emissions;

• Phase out coal-generated electricity by 2030 and generate 30 % of electricity from renewables by 2030;

• Introduce a cap on oil sands emissions at 100 megatons per year;

• Reduce methane emissions from upstream oil and gas production by 45% by 2025 (from 2014 levels).

The Alberta government has developed and updated an Implementation Plan, updated in June 2018, identifying key actions by the government in 2018 and 2019.
