Background: In order to minimize the vulnerability of energy supplies to external factors, the use of indigenously available renewable resources for energy generation is necessary. This will in turn reduce the pressure on the country's balance of payments. The Maldives has the potential for utilization of renewable resources such as solar, wind and biomass for energy needs. Pilot projects have been carried out and hybridized systems consisting of combinations of solar, wind, diesel and LPG have shown success in electricity generation that could be implemented nationwide. Commercial use of renewable energy is presently limited to solar photovoltaic panels in navigation lights and telecommunication systems. Solar thermal is used in some tourist resorts for water heating and lighting.

The renewable energy sector does face some barriers such as lack of capacities for development, design, implementation and management lack of financing available for renewable energy applications and renewable energy based livelihood projects, as well as lack of information on the options available in renewable energy technology, renewable energy statistics and research.

Tax Relief

Strategies:

Promote the use of economically viable, environment friendly, renewable energy resources.

Seek concessionary external financing to improve the economic feasibility for renewable energy projects that are environmentally and socially sound.

Assist the development of the renewable energy sector in increasing its contribution to the energy supply through the introduction of incentives and/or access to green funding that will attract the participation of the private sector.

Strategies from related policies:

Introduce incentives to power sector developers by facilitating access to grants, concessional finance and duty concessions to ensure affordability of energy supply(Policy: Provide all citizens with access to affordable and reliable supply of electricity)

Achievement: In order to attract relatively large financing from the private sector, a number of enabling policy measures have already been implemented and others are being planned. These include the elimination of import duty for RE products. As a result, local and international private investors have developed interest in the energy sector of Maldives and are willing to invest in RE projects. We receive Expression of Interests from several parties for our call for proposals to invest in RE projects in the Maldives. Moreover, a large amount of unnecessary cost is avoided from the ongoing RE projects. Also, some private businesses such as resort operators are now moving to use RE technology for lighting purpose etc. It is clear that the duty exemption regulation is a great advantage for these local businesses as well as foreign investors. We hope to involve individual customers and households in RE business once the net metering scheme is implemented.

Stakeholders : The Ministry of Environment and Energy (MEE) and Maldives Energy Authority(MEA) as the policy and regulatory bodies for the energy sector had successfully put their effort to include RE products in the duty exemption list of the Export Import Regulation. The Ministry of Economic Development (MED) is the organisation responsible for managing the economic activities including foreign imports and exports. The Maldives Customs Service is the implementing body of the export a

Why the AI Boom Could Trigger the Biggest Energy Trade in Decades

Artificial intelligence is creating a new class of infrastructure giants virtually overnight, and one innovative Bitcoin miner that made an early leap into the global power business, feeding the voracious appetite of AI data centers, is now being rewarded for years spent securing massive amounts of low-cost electrical power around the world. Years before artificial intelligence triggered a global race for power capacity, Bitzero Holdings (NASDAQ: AIBZ) was using cash flow from Bitcoin mining operations to secure large amounts of low-cost electrical…

Qatar and the U.S. Warn EU of Gas Crunch Over Methane Regulation

The United States and Qatar have once again warned the European Union against doubling down on climate policies seeking to penalize the LNG industry, saying that if it continues on this course, the EU will face a gas crunch and higher prices. “There is no viable path to compliance with the regulation”, the top energy officials of the U.S. and Qatar, Chris Wright and Saad al-Kaabi, wrote in a letter quoted by the Financial Times. “Because legal compliance remains paramount, exporters and importers alike are unwilling to enter into…

Global Battery Storage Boom Is A Boon for Tesla

Global battery storage installations are booming, and so is Tesla’s utility-scale battery business. Tesla has just signed a multi-year supply and execution agreement with clean energy infrastructure provider NatPower for more than 25 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Europe, as the continent is accelerating battery deployment to make the most of its domestic renewable energy resources. Europe’s battery storage and renewables-plus-storage installations are booming and set to further accelerate in the coming…

Why Wet Coffee Grounds Might Be The Next Waste-To-Energy Goldmine

A team of researchers at the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM) have just found a way to make biochar production faster and cheaper. The new method solves a major challenge in standard biochar production processes and potentially unlocks a recycling stream that can divert millions of tons of waste away from landfill annually and turn it into a productive energy source at a time when new energy alternatives are needed more urgently than ever before. Biochar is essentially charcoal that is made by heating up organic waste…

China’s Crude Imports Plunge To Lowest Level Since 2018

Oil prices remain headline-driven, taking direction from escalation and de-escalation in the U.S-Iran conflict in the near term. The first round of talks between the United States and Iran in Switzerland has concluded with positive comments from both sides, and an agreement to push for a final agreement within 60 days. However, there's considerable scepticism about whether more complex issues around nuclear technology and transit through the Strait of Hormuz can be fully resolved in the short timeframe. After all, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of…
