Federal energy RD&D activities, including renewables, were carried out by the Energy Research and Development Corporation (ERDC) with additional indirect support from CSIRO (a government agency) and universities. However, severe budget constraints led the government to abolish ERDC in May 1997, as the government considered that ERDC had established a good foundation for industry to take on a greater role in funding its research.
