Lithuania adopted an updated National Energy Independence Strategy in June 2024, revising and replacing earlier versions of the strategy originally adopted in 2012 and subsequently updated in 2018. The strategy sets long-term objectives for Lithuania to become an energy-independent country that produces sufficient energy for domestic needs and exports surplus energy. It is structured around four priorities: secure and reliable energy supply, 100% climate-neutral energy, transition to an electricity-based economy, and energy affordability. It foresees a systemic shift away from fossil fuels, expanded renewable generation, and increased electrification, with a full transformation of the energy system targeted by 2050.
