As part of the U.S. Industrial Demonstration Program, $1.7 billion in capital grants was awarded across six projects. However, SSAB withdrew from negotiations for its $500 million hydrogen plant in Mississippi. In June 2025, the Department of Energy’s Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations canceled 24 projects totaling $3.7 billion, including three hydrogen-related projects requesting $632 million. These included Orsted’s e-methanol plant, a CO₂-to-ethylene and hydrogen project, and ExxonMobil’s hydrogen-for-heating project, which may still proceed with private funding.
