The US Department of Energy (DOE) allocated $4mn for research and development of ceramic materials to boost the efficiency of hydrogen-fueled turbines. Projects will be selected based on their potential to improve ceramic matrix composite (CMC) temperature performance, or use predictive modeling to benchmark material performance. In fact, when used at more than a 75pc mix, fast-burning hydrogen can cause issues in modern gas turbine combustors. The DOE expects the research investment to lead to lower electricity costs.
