One third of the tax revenue of the CO2-tax (max. 450 mln CHF) goes into the federal and cantonal building refurbishment programme. The cantons top up the revenue with own funds. Roughly two thirds of the funds are allocated to Energy Efficiency Measures. The remaining third is allocated to renewable energies. As of 1.1.2018 max. CHF 30 mln per year may be allocated to subsidies for finding and developing geothermal energy resources suitable for direct use.
