In 2019, the PM-KUSUM scheme was approved by the Government of India. With the overall goal of providing energy security to farmers, the scheme aims to add solar capacity of 30,800 MW by 2022. The scheme has 3 components:
Component A: support for adding solar capacity of 10,000 MW through small solar power plants installation.
Component B: installation of 2 million standalone solar-powered agricultural pumps.
Component C: support to farmers in making 1.5 million existing grid-connected agricultural pumps solar-powered.
In November 2020 and February 2023, the Government of India amended and later extended the PM-KUSUM scheme until March 2026.
