Due to energy price hikes, the Colombian government electricity and gas subsidy scheme, which targets 12.4 million beneficiaries, has seen its budget rise in 2022. By the end of February 2022, it had reached the equivalent of 40% of the total amount disbursed in the previous year, and the cumulated cost for the third and fourth quarter of 2022 will go beyond COP 900 billion.

The 2023 national budget restricts the scheme access conditions to the poorest households, while ensuring that half of electricity and gas expenses are covered in specific areas.
