In response to the international price crisis, the Kenyan government implemented the following measures to support access to LPG as a cooking gas, from July 2022 onwards:
-in June 2022, the VAT on LPG was cut by half (from 16% to 8%). In June 2023, cooking LPG was exempted from VAT.
-in July 2022, the initial phase of a LPG subsidy scheme started, with the aim to distribute 60,000 six-kilo cylinders. The scheme was decided in the 2016/2017 fiscal year, but the price crisis led to a year-on-year sharp increase in cost in the government budget.
