Since 2013, Côte d’Ivoire has been working with the Climate and Clean Air Coalition to reduce short-lived climate pollutants and other air pollutants. Following this cooperation, the National Short-Lived Climate Pollutants Action Plan was adopted in 2019 by the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development. It outlines 16 mitigation measures which, if fully implemented, would lead to a 59% reduction in black carbon emissions and a 34% reduction in methane emissions by 2030.

The plan outlines two key actions to abate methane emissions from the oil and gas sector, with the goal of reducing 50% of avoidable fugitive emissions by 2030 and 70% by 2040:

Promote gas recovery and use in the oil and gas sector - Establishment of a programme to strengthen regulatory frameworks and technical capacities on fugitive emissions from ventilation as well as improved control unintentional leakage;

Reduce network leakage in gas transmission and distribution - Establishment of a programme to strengthen regulatory frameworks and technical capacities on unintentional leakage control.

In 2020, with the support of the Climate and Clean Air Coalition, the government of Côte d’Ivoire integrated this national action plan into the Nationally Determined Contribution revision process.
