Spain submitted its recovery and resilience plan in April 2021 to the European Commission.

Within the first pillar of the plan, one component relates to the transformation of the agricultural sector.

Related to the energy sector, a grant will cover up to 30% of the cost of energy efficiency projects and the eligible actions will have to achieve a reduction in final energy consumption of at least 10%. This programme will favour energy savings, improving performance and reducing energy consumption in the agricultural sector.

The management of the aid will be carried out by the autonomous communities.

Eligible actions are for example related to improving the energy efficiency of irrigation facilities, and the use of renewable thermal energy in agricultural operations.

The actions involving an increase of the water consumption or the irrigable surface will not be eligible.

Overall, EUR 563 million will be invested towards more energy efficiency in this sector over 3 years.
