Originally organized in 2003 as "The International Partnership for the Hydrogen Economy," this organization changed its official title to "The International Partnership for Hydrogen and Fuel Cells in the Economy" in December 2009. The Partnership (or IPHE) fosters international cooperation on hydrogen and fuel cell R & D, common codes and standards, and information sharing on infrastructure development. The IPHEs 17 partners organize, evaluate, and coordinate multinational research, development, and deployment programs that will advance the introduction of fuel cells and hydrogen infrastructure at a global scale. The U.S. served as chair of the steering committee from 2003 through 2007 and is continuing its active participation as a vice-chair of the steering committee. U.S. representatives also lead several work groups of the IPHE Implementation Liaison Committee. The IPHE provides a mechanism for partners to organize, coordinate, and implement effective, efficient, and focused international research, development, demonstration, and commercial utilization activities related to hydrogen and fuel cell technologies. The IPHE provides a forum for advancing policies, and common technical codes and standards that can accelerate the cost-effective transition to a hydrogen economy; and it educates and informs stakeholders and the general public on the benefits of, and challenges to, establishing the hydrogen economy.
