As of 2011, the Abu Dhabi government has phased out subsidies for certain livestock feed crops that consume 60% of water used for agriculture and up to 33% of total water consumption. Pilot programs are running to confirm climatically appropriate alternatives, and a training and subsidy program for crop transition and efficient irrigation is being put into place. Certain emirates have outright banned the planting of some crops, such as Rhodes grass, in order to reduce agricultural consumption of water.
