In October 2024, the BNetzA approved plans for a 9040 km to be gradually in operation from 2025 to 2032. The feed-in and exit capacity are 100 GW and 87 GW respectively once the network has been fully developed. Hydrogen demand by 2032 is expected (by FNB) to be 191 TWh/a with a network capacity of 278 TWh/a by the same year. The network also includes 470 km of distribution pipelines. The share of repurposed pipelines is 56%. The total cost of the network is estimated to be EUR 18.9 billion. The roll-out plan will be reviewed every 2 years via the network development plan process fpr natural gas and hydrogen.

The length of the network has decreased over time with the original version from 2023 having 11200 km and the one from July 2024 having 9667 km. The decrease from July 2024 is due to 313 km from withdrawal of regional distribution networks and 293 km that were either redundant or provided connection to individual companies.
