Regulation of the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources No. 26 of 2018 on the Implementation of Good Mining Practices and Supervision of Mineral and Coal Mining provides the regulatory framework for the implementation of good mining practices and the supervision of mineral and coal mining activities in Indonesia. It aims to ensure that mining operations are conducted responsibly, with attention to environmental management, reclamation, and post-mining obligations, while empowering inspectors to enforce compliance.

Good Mining Practices include:

Environmental management in accordance with the license holder’s Environmental Impact Analysis (AMDAL)

Prevention and restoration of the environment in the event of environmental pollution or damage.

Reclamation and post-mining obligations, such as the requirement for licence holders to submit and implement reclamation and post-mining plans, deposit guarantee funds and report the implementation of the plan to the relevant authority.

The regulation empowers mining inspectors to supervise mining activities by evaluating periodic reports submitted by licence holders, conducting periodic inspections, assessing the successful implementation of programmes and activities, suspend mining activities that pose environmental or safety risks and recommend permanent termination of operations if violations persist.
