Part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission and a dedicated INR 4 billion budget for R&D. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy will hold an annual conference with leading research institutes and industry to identify the areas of research that will be supported. R&D projects fall into four categories depending on their time horizon and focus:
- Mission Mode Projects (0-5 years): Focus on product development, e.g., modular electrolysers and PEM fuel cells.
- Grand Challenge Projects (0-8 years): Consortium mode projects targeting critical technology components like membrane electrode assemblies, catalysts, gas diffusion layers, etc.
- Blue Sky Projects (0-15 years): Longer-term research on advanced topics like third-generation electrocatalysts, reversible solid oxide electrolysers/fuel cells, seawater electrolysis, and novel hydrogen storage methods.
- Centers of Excellence: Supporting specialized institutions for advanced research infrastructure and expertise.
Financial support may cover up to 100% of project costs for academic/government/non-profit entities and up to 80% for private sector participants, subject to caps and specific approvals.
