India has committed INR 4.6 billion (USD 55 million) through FY2029–2030 to support pilot projects using hydrogen in steelmaking, including trials in existing blast furnaces and full hydrogen use in DRI furnaces. A request for proposals was issued in June 2024, and by October, three winners were announced, including the Steel Authority of India with a 3.2 ktpd project, alongside two smaller projects (50 tpd and 40 tpd). These projects are expected to be commissioned within three years, though full 100% hydrogen use is unlikely in the initial phase.
