The Norwegian Public Roads Administration (NPRA) looks after the public routes covered with ferries.
- The 2017 tender on the Hjelmeland–Nesvik connection had the goal of at least 50% of the energy needs are covered by hydrogen. The result was the operation of the "Hydra" ferry using liquid hydrogen since March 2023. The ferry has six 200-kW modules (from Ballard)
- The 2019 tender for the ferry connection Bodø-Røst-Værøy-Moskenes had a requirement for a minimum of 85% of the energy consumption for two vessels (to be operating from 2025)
