The European Union HighPerformance Computing Joint Undertaking has a budget of around USD 8 billion (2021-2027) and provides access to pre-exascale and petascale supercomputers. Its recent calls have been for large-scale capacity applications. By 2026, 13 new “AI factories” will provide preferential access to innovative start-ups and SMEs, with energy as a key focus area. More than 20 R&I projects related to the energy sector are currently benefiting from the computing facilities. Examples include the EoCoE-III (Energy-oriented Centre of Excellence for Exascale HPC applications) project, which foster the transition to decarbonized energy in Europe, and the MaX (MAterials design at the eXascale) project, which is centered around quantum simulations of materials and therefore contributes to green energy technology.
