The Electricity Security of Supply Strategy (Elektrizitäts Versorgungssicherheitsstrategie, E-VSS) was drawn up in accordance with section 88a of the Electricity Sector Act 2010 (ElWOG 2010) and identifies fields of action and measures for the long-term resilience of the electricity system. One of the most important measures is the transformation of the energy system towards indigenous renewable energy sources. Other areas include: flexibility and storage to provide for times when sun and wind do not complement each other optimally; optimising the grid infrastructure to keep pace with dynamic developments; and adapting to the effects of climate change on energy production.

The strategy was developed by the Ministry in consultation with the Regulator E-Control and the Control Area Manager Austrian Power Grid AG, and in cooperation with all relevant stakeholders in the Austrian electricity market, on the basis of the ElWOG 2010 and published in 2024. Due to the high demands on system stability and security of supply, the measures will be regularly evaluated on a yearly basis in the form of a status report. This will identify any need for adjustments and provide valuable insights for a future revision of the strategy. The E-VSS will be updated every five years.
