Section 9.36 of the NBC sets out the technical requirements for the energy-efficient design and construction of new buildings and additions. This section applies to Part 9 buildings – small buildings that are less than 600m2 in floor area or three or fewer storeys in height (e.g., houses and low-rise residential). Developed with significant support from NRCan, the current 2020 edition includes several enhancements over the previous 2015 edition. This includes a new performance compliance path with 5 tiers, each successive tier being increasingly stringent in terms of energy consumption and heat loss, with the highest tier yielding at least a 70% reduction in energy consumption over the baseline tier. In addition, a prescriptive compliance path based on energy conservation points is provided for Tier 2.  Subject to approval, further enhancements are developed and proposed for the 2025 edition, including technical requirements to address both energy efficient alterations to existing buildings and operational GHG emissions in new construction. Publication is set for late 2025.
