Global Initiative to Reduce Gas Flaring: “Zero Routine Flaring by 2030”

In April 2015, thirty-six governments around the world endorsed the World Bank's Global Initiative to Reduce Gas Flaring, committing themselves to ending the practice of routine gas flaring by 2030. The endorsing countries account for approximately 60% of total global gas flaring.

Endorsing governments commit to providing a legal, regulatory, investment, and operating environment conducive to upstream investments and to the development of viable markets for the utilisation of gas and the infrastructure necessary to deliver the gas to these markets. This includes requiring field development plans for new oil fields that incorporate sustainable utilization or conservation of the field’s associated gas without routine flaring. For existing oil fields, governments commit to making every effort to ensure flaring ends as soon as possible and no later than 2030.

The fifty-nine oil companies that endorsed this Initiative committed to developing new oil fields in accordance with the sustainable use or conservation of associated gas and the practice of zero routine flaring.

Endorsing governments and oil companies commit to annually reporting their flaring and progress towards the Initiative. Commitments are monitored through a variety of means, including government and company reports and satellite observations.
