National Parks Service Programs support efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change and integrate sustainable practices. Programs include: Green Parks Program, Climate Friendly Parks, Clean Cities National Parks Initiative, Alternative Transport Systems and Use of Clean Vehicles, and Sarbanes Transit in the Parks Program. The Green Parks Program outlines a collective vision and a long-term strategic plan for sustainable management of the operations of the National Park Service. The goals and objectives within the plan support reducing greenhouse gas emissions while sharing and encouraging park neighbors and visitors to take steps toward including sustainable actions in their communities. The Climate Friendly Parks (CFP) Program addresses climate change through implementing sustainable practices in national park operations, providing national parks with the management tools, resources, and support in order to: measure and inventory park-based greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, develop sustainable strategies to mitigate these emissions (e.g. develop Climate Action Plans) and adapt to climate change impacts, and educate the public about these efforts. The Clean Cities National Parks Initiative supports the use of renewable and alternative fuels, electric drive vehicles, and other vehicle energy-saving practices as well as transportation projects that educate park visitors on the benefits of reducing dependence on petroleum, cutting greenhouse gases, and easing traffic congestion. The Sarbanes Transit in the Parks Program provides funds to support alternative transportation systems, such as shuttle buses, rail connections and even bicycle trails, in parks and public lands.
