Kenya’s National E-Waste Management Strategy (2019/20 - 2023/24) is a comprehensive five-year plan designed to address the growing challenge of waste from electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) in the country. The strategy includes the management of lithium-ion batteries, recognising the need for proper disposal and recycling to mitigate environmental and health risks.
It focuses on five thematic areas:
i. Policy, Legal and Regulatory framework
ii. Infrastructure for E-waste management
iii. Resource mobilization
iv. Awareness creation, Capacity building, Education and Research
v. Monitoring and Evaluation
The strategy outlines a legal and regulatory framework applicable to both national and county governments, outlining priority actions for effective WEEE management. It mentions investment needs, identifies potential funding sources, and emphasises capacity-building measures.
Key outcomes and performance indicators are defined to measure the success of the strategy. Strategic actions include the establishment and enforcement of extended Producer responsibility and an advanced recycling fee to enhance producer and generator participation in E-waste management; as well as incentives to promote E-waste management. Additionally, the roles and responsibilities of various stakeholders in executing the plan are articulated.
While the strategy is set for a five-year period, its vision and objectives extend over a medium to long-term horizon of about ten years, aligning short to medium-term actions with a broader perspective on WEEE management in Kenya.
