The aim of the UK smart metering programme is for all homes and small businesses to have smart meters by 2020. Energy suppliers will be required to install smart meters and consumers with smart meters will be offered an in-home display (IHD) that lets them see how much energy they are using and what it will cost. This will let them have more control over their energy use and help them save energy and money. Between 2015 and 2020 energy suppliers will be responsible for replacing over 53 million gas and electricity meters. This will involve visits to 30 million homes and small businesses.
