The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy of India (MNRE) launched its National Bioenergy Programme in 2022, and extended it until 2025-26 through two phases. The programme has the following sub-schemes:

Waste to Energy Programme supporting the installation of large biogas-, bioCNG- and power- plants,

Biomass Programme for the use of pellets and briquettes in power generation, and

Biogas Programme supporting installation of family and medium size biogas installations in rural areas.
