On 18 July 2022, the European Union and Azerbaijan signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on a strategic partnership in the field of energy, which includes the commitment to double the capacity of the Southern Corridor pipeline to over 20 bcm a year to the EU by 2027.

In the shorter term, Azerbaijan is already increasing its deliveries to the EU, expected at 12 bcm in 2022 compared to 8.1 bcm in 2021.

The MoU includes support from the EU to reduce methane flaring and venting in Azerbaijan’s gas production, with the aim to support Azerbaijan's accession to the Global Methane Pledge.
