Ministry of Health launches probe, questions 2 doctors over promotion of exosome injections

RIYADH — The Ministry of Health announced that it is investigating reports circulating on social media regarding the use of exosome injections in violation of the ministry’s regulations. The ministry confirmed that it has initiated legal proceedings in connection with the incident. It has begun questioning the two doctors involved, and is completing all relevant regulatory requirements. The ministry clarified that all health practices and services must be carried out in accordance with officially approved licenses and accreditations, urging healthcare practitioners and facilities to comply with the regulations and bylaws governing healthcare operations. It further emphasized that any cosmetic product intended for external use may not be approved or promoted as a medical treatment, nor administered as an intravenous injection, without the necessary approvals and accreditations from the relevant authorities. The ministry stressed that patient safety remains a top priority, calling for strict adherence to approved scientific and regulatory standards. It also underscored the importance of healthcare practitioners upholding professional ethics and responsibilities to ensure the continued quality of healthcare and the safety of patients. It is noteworthy that exosome therapy is a regenerative treatment that uses nano-sized vesicles (30–150 nm) released by mesenchymal stem cells to deliver growth factors, microRNA, and anti-inflammatory signals directly to damaged tissue — promoting repair and reducing inflammation without transplanting cells. Because these vesicles are pre-manufactured and clinical-grade, treatment requires no culture period and can be administered same-day.
